Honeysuckle

Honeysuckle ( Lonicera ) is a creeper - more accurately a family of climbing plants - found in Europe , China, Asia and the U.S., so it is widely used . This creeper can not even attach itself and have to entangle the trees and shrubs so that it can tolerate shade.

There are many different varieties. They grow in all types of moist soil and prefer partial shade, but they can also be planted in full shade . As climbers are attracted to the light. The woody stems can be several meters long. Various climbers have different ways to climb on . Honeysuckle climbs by wrapping themselves around trees and shrubs. This is a plant which twists clockwise , as all other varieties of Lonicera , which means that the wraps around trees and shrubs in the clockwise direction .

Scent
Honeysuckle has a wonderful fragrance, especially common honeysuckle ( Lonicera periclymenum ) . The smell is strongest in the evening, and on warm summer evenings you can smell them before you actually see them. These plants attract moths and other insects that are active at night. These insects ensures that the plants are pollinated .

Kaprifoliums flower stalk has heads that are yellowish - white and sometimes red or purple . The flowers are 4-5 cm in size and has two lips with a narrow tube , which is at least 2 cm long. The upper lip and lower lip curled slightly back during the flowering period . The flowers have long anthers on filaments that characteristically protruding from the crown.

Well-known kaprifoliumsorter
Lonicera periclymenum ' Belgica ' . The leaves of this variety are slightly thicker than those in the general Lonicera periclymenum . The leaves have an incredible purple- violet color when the flowers are still in bud . Lonicera periclymenum ' Serotina ' . This well-known variety has thinner leaves than the common Lonicera , and the buds are dark purple . Lonicera Heckrottii . A very sturdy black as ' Gold Flame ' originated. This cultivated variety was imported to Europe from America in 1960 and has now become very popular.

Honeysuckle is a member of the Caprifoliaceae family , which comes from the Latin word ' caper ' meaning goat, and ' folium ' meaning leaf . The origin of the name Lonicera is uncertain . It is assumed that the botanist Linnaeus named the plant after Johann Lonitzer , a German physician and naturalist ( 1499-1569 ) . Another possibility is that he named Lonicera after Adam Lonicer , a physician and expert nature from that period who wrote books including ' Naturalis Historae Opus Novum ' .

Medical specialists may be interested to know that in Roman times was honeysuckle used to treat lung diseases and infections of the urinary tract.
